Dental Wellness

The mouth – body connection has long been known.  A common saying can be heard resonating in the halls of the Dental School, “The mouth is the window into the body.”  We know with good dental hygiene, you can greatly reduce your risk of cavities, enamel loss, gingivitis, periodontitis, breakage or loss of teeth.  In turn, good oral health can lessen the risk of systemic health problems.  Direct links have been found with oral health and diabetes, heart disease, immune disorders, osteoporosis and arthritis, chronic inflammation, respiratory disease and cancers.

In addition to reducing your risk for other health issues, regular visits with us and good home care can save you money.   We often can spot trouble long before it happens, before it breaks, before it hurts.  Even with dental insurance, the costs associated with poor oral health add up.  While preventive dentistry may not completely eliminate your need for fillings, root canals, crownwork or implant dentistry, it can go a long way in reducing your need for these more expensive treatments.

No matter your age, everyone benefits from preventive dentistry.  The American Dental Association cites the key ingredients in preventing tooth decay and maintaining a healthy mouth as:

  • brushing twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste
  • cleaning between the teeth daily with floss or another interdental cleaner
  • eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks
  • visiting your dentist regularly

For most people, a dental cleaning and exam every six months stays ahead of plague buildup and staining.  For people with periodontal or gum tissue issues, we recommend a professional cleaning more often.  An annual look inside your teeth, gum tissue and bone with x-rays allows us to check for trouble areas we cannot see with a visual examination.  Each and every visit we check for oral cancers.  For people who have tooth replacements like dentures, implant snap dentures or implant bridgework, a dental cleaning and exam every six months, or in some cases anually, allows us to watch for breakage or material fatigue, the best fit and comfort, keeping your satisfaction level high.

Smiling, speaking and chewing - you need your smile for a life time.  We specialize in smiles.  Your smile.
